UNIMA Nordic is a voluntary grouping of UNIMA Centres from the Nordic region, including Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The centres initially came together in response to the Russia-Ukraine war and through a wish to support Ukrainian puppeteers and puppetry students who are displaced or unable to continue their work or studies. UNIMA Nordic made an application to the Nordic Culture Fund for a project to set up a series of online and in-person workshops and lectures over the next two years for Ukrainian and Nordic puppeteers, to foment cultural exchange and the development of new puppetry skills.

One of the applications made was successful and UNIMA Nordic will be launching this project at the International puppetry festival in Charleville on 22nd September this year. The lectures and workshops will then continue over the next months beginning with lectures and presentations by Ukrainian and Finnish puppeteers in November, and will follow with a programme focusing on puppetry heritage, applied puppetry, creative and experimental practices and popular puppetry techniques from the different countries. Each workshop or session will be hosted by a different country within UNIMA Nordic.

UNIMA Finland will arrange the lecture series which are open to all UNIMA members; the title for the lectures is ‘Puppet theatre across continents’. We will begin with the theme of heritage. What does this mean in different continents or countries? Have we already lost something valuable within the field of puppet theatre?

The precise subject of the first lecture will be published soon, along with the exact date and time. The lecturers will be experts in the field of puppet theatre, both artists and researchers. The lectures will be live streamed but will also be translated into Ukrainian and will be digitised for future viewing.

UNIMA Finland will call on specialists from UNIMA Commissions: from the Commissions from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Three Americas.

The goals for these lectures are to bring different professions together, to create a collective language of puppetry and to progress international relationships. They will be interesting for professionals, amateurs, scenographers, prop makers, directors and so in in the field of puppetry; and in particular for Ukrainian puppetry students; this project will also bring about collaboration between learning institutions and art organisations.

UNIMA Nordic med bidrag til figurteaterarbeid i Ukraina

I starten av Ukraina-krigen stoppet alt opp ved figurteaterutdanningene i Ukraina, med bombing av teaterbygninger og universell mobilisering av alle unge, friske menn. Mange studenter mistet deltidsjobbene sine og slet med å klare seg finansielt. Vi i UNIMA Nordic spurte UNIMA i Ukraina om det var noe vi kunne bidra med.

Dette er ønskelisten vi fikk om hjelp fra UNIMA Nordic:

Stipendier til figurteaterstudentene så vel i Ukraina som til dem som er på flukt.
Lønn til lærerne deres.
Kjøp av deres forestillinger for turneer i våre land.
Samarbeidsprosjekter slik at produksjonskostnader kunne subsidieres/deles på de involverte.
Praktikantplasser.
Fremskaffe rettigheter til utvalgte aktuelle produksjoner.
Workshops, online og ved fysisk tilstedeværelse.
Gjesteforelesninger av ukrainske teatervitenskapsfolk ved skandinaviske læresteder som en måte å skaffe penger på.

På den tiden var det flere initiativer fra internasjonale skuespillerorganisasjoner som blant annet et opprettet støttefond, som vi kunne henvise til.

Vi undersøkte mulighetene for samarbeid på høyskole-/universitetsnivå her i Norge, men det viste seg umulig på grunn av overbelastet lederskap og underfinansiering.

Vi kom aldri i kontakt med flyktede figurteaterstudenter, men jeg mener at det er skjedd samarbeid med slike i Sverige og Frankrike.

Vitalij Goltzov i Tsjernihiv Regionale Teater ønsket rettigheter til Det syvende segl av Ingmar Bergman og til Pessi og Illusia av finske Yrjö Kokko. Begge klarte vi (Det vil si Agneta Attling (S) og Niina Kettunen-Niemi (F)) å få til. Oleksandra Odokiienko i Kharkiv ønsket seg rettighetene til Mummitroll-fortellingen Kometen kommer av Tove Jansson. Og vet du hva? Niina Kettunen-Niemi fikk arvtakerne til Tove Jansson til å bevilge dette helt gratis for en periode på to år! Olga Dorofeeva ville sette opp Diktatoren av svenske, nå avdøde, Ulf Stark. Hans rettigheter hviler hos Colombine förlag, og vi formidlet kontakt.
